Tips for the Holidays

I adore Christmas time, all the laughter and lights that come with it. I’m unsure how Christmas will play out this year, but I know that having littles can make juggling all the events stressful. It’s not because you don’t love this time of year, it’s becoming over-stimulated and exhausted which can lead to stress. That joyous moment comes crashing down around us! So how do we handle it? Is there anything to make it easier? Sure!

Take a deep breath! What your children need is a non-stressed parent to begin with. Make sure you are taken care of, too! You need to be rested before you begin your day just as much as they do.

Let the kids help. Those cookies absolutely do not have to look perfect! Let the kiddos join in on decorating them. They’ll have fun, and you will have one more thing to check off that list with ease.

Don’t forget nap time! If you are traveling over the holidays, plan ahead where and when the kiddos will nap. I always liked leaving to travel to the next place right before nap time. My little one would get her nap on the way, and be refreshed and ready to go by the time we got where we were going. I can’t promise this will work for everyone, but if your little one easily falls asleep in the car on errand runs, I’d give it a go! Do you need to shove that pack n’ play in the back of your vehicle for later naps? Maybe! Keep them on somewhat of their regular schedule; I’m almost positive there’s nothing worse than a tired toddler at a family gathering.

Do think of breaks for longer travel times. Do you have an infant that still needs regular feedings? Got a newly potty-trained toddler? I can’t lie; you will probably have to plan your travel around stopping for a feeding break, or that toddler who just has to go. Have both a newborn and a toddler? Go ahead and map out those rest stops!

Wear your baby! It doesn’t matter how you feed your baby; they LOVE being close to you. Baby wearing is great for helping you get everything done while keeping baby content. It is also wonderful for napping, and reducing overstimulation. You can even use it to help reduce all that passing around between family members during fussy times.

Make use of the guest room. It’s a wonderful place to pause for some quiet time, feedings, and a nap.

Enjoy, and take the time to slow down and soak in all those amazing little memories you are creating!
